Assignments in the Light
by Nathan Shaw
“Assignments in the light”—it’s a simple phrase, and one that God keeps speaking to me. Many assignments are being released to God’s people right now. These assignments can be discovered by simply stepping into the light. In Revelation chapter 1 John was given a specific assignment: “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia” (Revelation 1:11). The assignment was given directly from the glorified Jesus. John was overcome by the intense glory emanating from Jesus and fell prostrate as though dead. John described the glory as having the brilliance of the sun shining in its full strength. It goes without saying that John’s assignment was given in the light. In fact, the brilliance of this light serves as the backdrop for everything else revealed in the book of Revelation. Unfortunately too many lose sight of this light and become darkened in their minds.
In Revelation chapter 10 John was given a further assignment—this time by a mighty angel. The angel came directly from heaven to earth and, not surprisingly, his face shone like the sun. He had a scroll in his hand and John was commanded to eat the scroll. After John ate the scroll the angel said to him, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings” (Revelation 10:11). Once again John was given an assignment in the light. John’s first assignment was to write to the seven churches in Asia. His second assignment was to prophesy to the nations. Although these assignments were given directly to John the message to the seven churches was clear: You get assignments in the light, and the assignments impact nations!
The heart-beat of the book of Revelation is revealed in Revelation chapters 4 and 5. John was taken through a door standing open in heaven. Through the door he beheld the Father seated on His throne. The glory and splendour emanating from the throne was breath-taking beyond words. As the scene progressed John saw a scroll in the right hand of the Father. There was a moment of great tension as a strong angel proclaimed with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?” (Revelation 5:2). Finally the tension was resolved when Jesus, the Lamb of God, took the scroll from the Father. In response all of heaven erupted: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9 NIV). This message of redemption pulsates through the entire book of Revelation.
No matter whether an assignment is simple or profound, assignments given in the light have a different quality to them. They bring forth hope rather than despair and redemption rather than destruction. It’s time to step into the light. That’s where you will discover and receive the assignments He has for you. In fact, you can do it right now. Take a moment to picture the glorified Jesus. By faith take a literal step into the light. You may be surprised what He reveals to you. I can assure you—whether it happens immediately or over time—you will receive assignments in the light.
